Ashburn Sports Complex Plans Sent to Committee for Further Study

This week, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on the 40 acre Play To Win sports complex proposed for the north end of Belmont Ridge Road near Route 7. Supporters came and spoke about the dire need for athletic fields in the county, while others voiced concern regarding traffic, lighting, and noise issues.

The project would build 12 synthetic athletic fields, 9 of which will be outdoor, a restaurant, and a leadership training center. Chris Bourassa, a baseball coach at Freedom High School in South Riding, and a former software company owner, is the founder of Play to Win, which would be built with private funding. According to some reports the Washington Glory professional softball team has signed on to use the facility, as have Loudoun Soccer, TripleEDGE Lacrosse, the Love Thy Neighbor Foundation, and the Team Harkes soccer academy.

The Board of Supervisors decided as a result of the hearing to send the plans to the Transportation and Land Use committee for further study; that committee will meet on July 28th.

With children participating in youth sports in Loudoun County, I have seen firsthand how hard the league coordinators have to work to get field time for practicing and games. In the hopes of having room for as many of our youth to be able to participate, we do need these fields. I’ll be following this with great interest!

Update: The facility gained approval from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors on September 2nd, 2008.  The facility is expected to be completed within a year.
