LoCo High Schools Making the Grade

school LoCo High Schools Making the Grade

This came through from LCPS and we thought it was worth sharing:

All 12 of the Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) high schools eligible to be ranked nationally by The Washington Post’s Challenge Index received this honor in 2014. (John Champe High School is not yet eligible to be ranked.)

The Challenge Index, conceived by Jay Mathews of The Washington Post in 1998, seeks to measure the academic rigor of America’s schools. The formula Mathews devised for these rankings takes the number of Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests taken by all students at a school and divides them by the number of graduating seniors to come up with a Challenge Index ratio.

The statistics used in compiling the 2014 Challenge Index come from the 2012-2013 school year.

The Washington Post listed the top 2,093 high schools in America based on the Challenge Index criteria. These schools comprise the top 9 percent of the nation’s 22,000 public high schools. All LCPS high schools fell within the top 5 percent of America’s high schools in this order:

Loudoun Valley (242)
Briar Woods (320)
Woodgrove (351)
Tuscarora (352)
Dominion (423)
Potomac Falls (439)
Stone Bridge (441)
Broad Run (451)
Loudoun County (593)
Freedom (623)
Park View (854)
Heritage (1,083)

It’s nice to get outside confirmation of what most of us feel is an excellent school system.

Cheers,
Mike
