About nine years ago Heather began having migraines on a regular basis. After a few doctors appointments and some research on our own, we realized many were being caused by chemicals in our food. If you actually read what is on the label of stuff you buy in the grocery store you might never eat! Now we didn’t go all doomsday prepper and start growing everything ourselves, but we did make changes to what we eat and where we get it.
Fast forward to the Loudoun Grown Expo this past weekend, where we had a chance to investigate another option in our effort to eat healthy. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a seasonal subscriptions to a farmer in exchange for a weekly share of produce, eggs, or meat. Great Country Farms, Potomac Vegetable Farm, and Stonybrook Organic Farm were among those on hand and each offer a slightly different package. There were also a few local meat and poultry farmers at the expo and we were able to pick up a few items from Lothar’s Sausages and Buchanan Farms.
Part of what we love about living in LoCo is having so many of these options, and an added bonus is knowing we are helping out a neighbor. After what we learned at the Expo, there is no doubt we will be taking advantage of one of these in the near future.
If you would like to find a local CSA , pick-your-own farm, roadside stand, or farmers market, visit the Loudoun Farms website.
Cheers,
Mike
