The Scoop:
Sterling was established as the very first planned community in Loudoun County in 1962, on what had previously been a dairy farm. New homes were prefabricated houses built by US Steel that featured air conditioning and cost less than comparable homes in Fairfax County. Dulles International Airport was dedicated later that year, and Sterling grew quickly. If you are traveling into Loudoun from the DC corridor, Sterling is the first city you come to. While it doesnโt have an established โdowntownโ, there is rich history in Sterling Park, Countryside, and Sugarland Run. Potomac Falls is also part of Sterling, despite having a dedicated post office, and encompasses the area closer to the Potomac River. Sterling is home to 13 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 4 high schools (listed below, with links.)
Neighborhoods have been built in every decade since the 60โs, and Sterlingโs population is now over 28,000. Dulles Town Center mall opened in 2000, and there are numerous restaurants and shopping centers nearby. If you like to golf, Sterling has the Algonkian Park golf course, Sterling Golf Club, and the private Trump National (formerly Loweโs Island). Algonkian Regional Park also has more than 800 acres of open park to enjoy, with hiking trails, picnic shelters, and even vacation cottages for rent. Sterling continues to be a coveted and convenient location to live, close to major commuting routes of Route 28, Route 7, and the Dulles Toll Road.
