Sterling
The Scoop:
Sterling was established as the first planned community in Loudoun County in 1962, on what had previously been a dairy farm. New homes were prefabricated houses built by US Steel that featured air conditioning and cost less than comparable homes in Fairfax County. Dulles International Airport was dedicated later that year, and Sterling grew quickly.
Neighborhoods have been built in every decade since, and Sterling’s population is now over 28,000. Dulles Town Center mall opened in 2000, and there are numerous restaurants and shopping centers nearby. Sterling continues to be a coveted location to live, close to major commuting routes of Route 28, Route 7, and the Dulles Toll Road.
