The PGA of America has just announced that Loudoun’s own Club at Creighton Farms and River Creek Golf Club will be co-hosting the 2011 Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship, presented by Mercedes Benz, from October 6-9th! This marks the first time that the Middle Atlantic PGA section has hosted the Championship.
According to the PGA’s announcement, the field will be comprised of 264 senior PGA Professionals representing all 41 PGA sections across the country, competing for a $265,000 purse. The first two rounds will be played at both venues, with the final two rounds held at Creighton Farms. The top 35 finishers earn a berth in the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in May 2012. The top five finishers earn an exemption into the final stage of the 2011 Champions Tour National Finals. It’s a great opportunity for club professionals to break into the Senior PGA circuit.
(Coincidentally, I just wrote a post about the Creighton Farms community on Saturday, if you want to read more…)
As I’ve mentioned before, my husband Mike is the PGA Head Professional at Westpark Golf Club in Leesburg. He’s well under the age for qualifying for the Senior PGA Championship…but we do know several area pros that may take a shot at it. I’ll keep you posted when the final field is announced, so we can come out and support any local professionals that make it in. I think this is a wonderful opportunity for Loudoun County, and also a great way to catch the attention of new golfers and grow the game of golf. Will I see you there?
Cheers,
Heather
