When you grow up on the eastern shore of Maryland, fresh seafood is just a part of life. Heather’s grandfather owned a few crab pots, and she will be the first to tell you they taste much better when cooked 20 minutes after they come out of the water. So trying to find a place three hours from the ocean that could keep up with those standards was a struggle, but thanks to the recommendation of friends, we were able to find Lowry’s Crab Shack.
Originally on the east side of Hamilton as Lowry’s Farm & Seafood Market, Donald and Leslie began serving fresh seafood in 1998. The Crab Shack opened it’s current location on the west end of town in September, 2007, on the site formerly known as Planet Wayside. The menu offers chicken and burgers for the landlubber (that’s actually on the menu), and lobster, fish, shrimp, oysters, clams, scallops, and Chesapeake Bay blue crabs for the seafood lover. The dining room is made of planks from a huge oak tree which stood where the parking lot is now, and you can also sit outside under the umbrellas and enjoy the fresh air. Carry out is available, although I would suggest calling ahead as everything is prepared to order.
It has become a family tradition of ours to finish off every summer with a Labor Day crab feast, and on more than one occasion we have carried home a bucket of chicken after a long day on the softball field. If you are looking for a place to get absolutely the best fresh seafood in the area, stop by Lowry’s and tell them we sent you. Enjoy!
