During my time as a golf professional, I had the chance to have an impact on a few pretty good players. Some went on to play at Division I schools, and others became PGA Professionals. So far, no one has outperformed Billy Hurley III.
A Leesburg native and Loudoun County HS alum, Billy was a junior member at Westpark GC. I was not his instructor, that was Mark Guttenberg, but I did have a chance to play with him a few times and offer some pointers along the way. He went on to graduate from the Naval Academy, play in the Walker Cup (the Ryder Cup for amateurs), and make it to the PGA Tour in 2012. That season, despite a 4th place finish at the AT&T National in Bethesda and another top 10 at the John Deer Classic, he didn’t earn enough to keep his card.
As a member of the Web.com tour last year, he nearly captured his first professional victory in a playoff at the United Leasing Championship. With a strong finish in the Web.com Tour Championship three weeks ago, he earned his 2013-14 PGA Tour card. His first event on Tour this year was the Frys.com Open last week, where he finished T-9th. If you want to follow along, you’ll find him on facebook, Twitter (@BillyHurley3), or his website.
Good luck Billy, we’re rooting for you!
Cheers,
Mike
